Provenance

Where it came from

The Rat token, bearing collector number 8, was released in 2024 as part of the ancillary set accompanying Magic: The Gathering's 'Outlaws of Thunder Junction' Commander decks. These tokens were designed to represent the board presence of creatures generated by various spells and abilities within the set, specifically supporting themes focused on vermin swarms and graveyard interaction that were prevalent in the release's 'Quick Draw' and 'Desert Bloom' archetypes.

The visual design follows the thematic aesthetic of the Thunder Junction plane, which blends classic fantasy tropes with a gritty, frontier-inspired Western setting. The illustration portrays a rugged, somewhat mangy rodent suited to the desert landscape, maintaining visual cohesion with the broader suite of tokens produced for the set. These tokens were manufactured to meet the functional requirements of gameplay, ensuring players had physical identifiers for their temporary creatures during intense Commander matches.
