Where it came from
The Ravener card originates from the Warhammer 40,000 Commander set, released in 2022 as part of a high-profile collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop. This set was designed to integrate the grimdark lore of the Tyranid hive fleet into the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering, specifically through the 'Tyranid Swarm' deck. The card captures the Ravener, a subterranean serpentine organism notorious for burrowing beneath enemy lines to ambush infantry in the tabletop game.
The artwork for this specific printing, designated by the collector number 138★, features the distinct illustrative style commissioned for the expansion to evoke the biological horror of the Tyranid faction. By incorporating thematic keywords like 'devour' and 'burrow,' the design team aimed to mirror the Ravener's tactical role as a shock troop. Upon release, the set was well-received by both Magic players and Warhammer enthusiasts for its fidelity to the source material's aesthetic and aggressive gameplay style.
