Provenance

Where it came from

Sculpting Steel was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion. Designed as a flexible rare artifact, its ability to enter the battlefield as a copy of any other artifact reflected the set's thematic focus on a world made entirely of metal and the modular nature of the Phyrexians who inhabit it.

The version included in the 2022 Warhammer 40,000 Commander set features new artwork by Pierre Loyvet. This iteration was created to integrate thematic elements from the Warhammer 40,000 universe into Magic's mechanics, with the illustration capturing the industrial, grim aesthetic of the setting to ensure the card felt cohesive within a deck themed around the technological horrors of the 41st millennium.
