Its presence in the Ninth Edition core set, released in 2005, marked a continuation of its role as a fundamental resource for disruption in the black color identity. The card was selected for the Ninth Edition to provide players with a reliable, low-cost way to thin an opponent's hand while establishing a board presence.

The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by Darrell Riche. Riche, known for his contribution of numerous cards during the late 1990s and 2000s, captured the quintessential aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering creatures from that era by focusing on a visceral, predatory depiction of the pests.
