Zombify

Zombify was first printed in the Urza's Legacy expansion in 1999 and subsequently reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005. As a sorcery that returns a creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield, it became a staple of black-aligned graveyard-recursion decks, reflecting the core mechanical identity of the color. Its inclusion in the Ninth Edition core set marked a period where Wizards of the Coast sought to provide players with foundational, reliable spells that defined the essential functions of each color.

The artwork for the Ninth Edition printing was created by Mark Romanoski, who utilized a dark, visceral style typical of the early-to-mid 2000s Magic aesthetic. Romanoski's design emphasizes the macabre nature of necromancy, focusing on the grotesque physical transformation inherent in raising the dead.
