Provenance

Where it came from

Raze was released in 1998 as part of the Urza's Saga set, the first installment of the Urza Block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore the deep lore surrounding the artificer Urza and featured the introduction of the enchantment mechanic and land-based utility cards. The card represents the aggressive, destructive philosophy of the Red color pie during a period defined by high-powered, complex mechanical interactions.

The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Greg Staples. His contribution to Urza's Saga leans into the dark, industrial fantasy aesthetic of the setting, depicting the raw chaotic energy characteristic of Red-aligned spells. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility option, primarily utilized in specific aggressive strategies that sought to capitalize on land destruction to disrupt the momentum of slower, resource-heavy decks.
