Where it came from
Reaver Ambush was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common card within the set, it was designed to support the mechanical themes of the plane of Ixalan, specifically the aggressive, treasure-focused tactics associated with the Brazen Coalition pirates. It serves as a narrative and mechanical representation of a sudden, lethal skirmish in the jungle or coastal regions of the set's central continent.
The card features illustration by artist Mathias Kollros, who was tasked with capturing the visceral, fast-paced nature of a pirate assault. The visual design emphasizes the predatory efficiency of the attackers, reflecting the set's emphasis on tribal synergy and high-tempo gameplay. Upon release, it was received as a functional tool for Limited formats, providing players with necessary removal options to navigate the competitive and creature-dense environment of the Ixalan block.
