Rebuff the Wicked

Rebuff the Wicked was released in 2007 as part of the Planar Chaos set, the second expansion in the Time Spiral block for Magic: The Gathering. The set explored an alternate reality where historical events in the game's lore had unfolded differently, leading to a focus on 'color-shifted' cards that gave mechanical identities to colors that had not traditionally possessed them. This white instant was designed to provide white decks with a direct counterspell effect, a mechanic typically reserved for blue, to reflect the 'shifted' nature of the planar timeline.

The card was illustrated by the artist Aleksi Briclot. In keeping with the set's theme, the artwork features a stern, powerful figure—often interpreted as a representation of a white-aligned mage or cleric—manifesting a barrier of light to deflect incoming magical threats. The piece was well-received by the player base for both its clear, dramatic aesthetic and its high utility, as it remains a staple white interaction spell in formats that allow it.
