Provenance

Where it came from

Rebuild was released in 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion, the second set in the Urza block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed to explore the deep lore surrounding the artificer Urza and featured mechanics that interacted heavily with artifacts. Coming on the heels of the controversial Urza's Saga, this set aimed to refine the power level of the environment while maintaining the complex mechanical identity of the block.

The card features illustration by artist Pete Venters, who was a prolific contributor to the game's early aesthetic. Venters leaned into the industrial, magi-tech visual language that defined the Urza’s Legacy set, depicting a mechanical reconstruction process consistent with the set's focus on repair and artifice. Upon release, the card saw modest play in constructed formats for its ability to bounce artifacts, though it is primarily remembered today as a functional relic of the block's distinct mechanical identity.
