Reckless Scholar

Reckless Scholar was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, serving as a functional reprint of the earlier card Merfolk Looter. It was designed to provide players with a repeatable card filtering mechanism, allowing them to draw a card and then discard one, which helps manage hand quality and enables graveyard-based synergies. The card depicts a scholar surrounded by unstable magical research, capturing the flavor of a character so obsessed with knowledge that they ignore the physical risks of their pursuit.

The version included in the 2020 Jumpstart set features updated modern card templating while retaining the classic utility of the original design. Jumpstart was developed as an accessible, randomized drafting experience that pairs two distinct themes to create a playable deck, and Reckless Scholar was selected for the 'Spellcasting' pack to reinforce the set's focus on blue-aligned card advantage and interaction. The illustration for the card, handled by long-time Magic contributor Greg Staples, emphasizes the frantic, high-energy nature of the character's intellectual desperation.
