Where it came from
Recommission was released in late 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. The card depicts a thematic moment of restoration, reflecting the set's central conceit of archeology and the repurposing of ancient artifacts. It serves as a mechanical homage to the white-aligned reanimation and protection spells found throughout the game's long history.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a clean, deliberate style to capture the process of reviving a fallen mechanical construct. The design aims to convey a sense of hope amidst the backdrop of total war, emphasizing the importance of salvaging technology to endure the ongoing conflict. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its versatility and its ability to provide a defensive boost to lower-cost creatures.
