Where it came from
Phalanx Vanguard was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion set that revisited the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra. The set was designed to evoke a retro, mechanical aesthetic rooted in the lore of the early 1980s, focusing on the artifact-heavy warfare and massive siege machinery central to the game's foundational mythos.
The card features artwork by artist Jason Rainville, who captured the disciplined, metallic aesthetic of the Argivian soldiers. The design intent was to reflect the desperate, militarized state of the world during the fratricidal war, resulting in a functional white-mana creature that emphasizes defensive coordination and battlefield presence, consistent with the set's broader mechanical themes of soldier synergy.
