Where it came from
Recruit the Worthy was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was specifically engineered to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them needing to pass through a Standard-legal release, allowing designers to revisit older mechanics and concepts that would be too complex for a standard-rotation environment.
The card features artwork by Johannes Voss, whose painterly and emotive style became a staple of the set's aesthetic. The illustration depicts a scene of transition and selection, aligning with the card's mechanical function of utilizing the convoke mechanic—a keyword that emphasizes the collective strength of one's creatures. It was received by players as a functional utility tool, prized for its flexibility and ability to generate board presence in draft and constructed play.
