Talisman of Curiosity

The Talisman of Curiosity was introduced in the 2019 expansion set Modern Horizons, a set uniquely designed by Wizards of the Coast to bypass the standard set rotation by introducing cards directly into the Modern format. This card is part of a cycle of two-colored mana rocks, completing a series of talismans that originated in the 2003 Mirrodin block. The design intent was to provide faster, more efficient mana acceleration for Simic-colored decks while balancing the utility with a self-inflicted damage penalty.

The artwork for this particular card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, whose work often defines the aesthetic of modern artifacts within the game. Velinov leaned into the sleek, metallic, and slightly ominous visual language of the Mirrodin plane, focusing on the artifact's capacity to channel energy. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its technical utility, quickly becoming a staple in Commander and competitive Modern formats due to its versatility as a mana source.
