Provenance

Where it came from

Recycle was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Wizards of the Coast during a period of aggressive mechanical experimentation, the card reflects the set's focus on high-impact enchantments and complex resource management. It was intended to provide green decks with a potent, albeit risky, engine for card advantage by allowing players to convert lands into fresh draw opportunities.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Anson Maddocks, whose distinct, organic style defined much of the game’s early visual identity. Maddocks utilized a somber, muted palette to convey the thematic essence of ecological reclamation and decay. While the card is often cited by players for its significant mana cost and the inherent vulnerability of discarding one's own land base, it remains a notable example of the experimental design philosophy that characterized the late 1990s era of the game.
