Where it came from
Red Ward was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the world's first collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. Following the rapid sell-out of the Alpha set, Beta was produced to meet overwhelming demand and corrected several minor printing errors from its predecessor, cementing the visual identity of the early game.
The card’s artwork, illustrated by Dan Frazier, features a minimalist and functional aesthetic consistent with the early conceptual style of the game. Frazier focused on evocative, symbolic imagery to convey the card's defensive magical effect, a style that became iconic among players and helped define the high-fantasy visual language of the hobby during its formative years.
