Dark Ritual

Dark Ritual was released as part of Limited Edition Beta in 1993, the second print run of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to provide Black with a signature 'ritual' effect, allowing players to accelerate their mana production at the cost of card advantage. This mechanic was central to the game's early identity, establishing Black as a color defined by short-term power spikes and resource trading.

The artwork for this version was provided by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces to the game's inaugural sets. Her illustration depicts a dark, ritualistic scene that emphasizes the ominous and occult nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card quickly became a staple in competitive play, particularly in formats that allowed for fast, aggressive strategies, cementing its status as one of the most iconic and frequently reprinted utility spells in the history of the game.
