Where it came from
Reign of the Pit is a sorcery card featured in the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. The card was designed to support the set's central themes of organized crime, urban decay, and demon-worshiping cabals within the art-deco inspired metropolis of New Capenna, functioning as a board-wiping effect that rewards the player for sacrificing their own creatures.
The card's striking illustration was crafted by artist Campbell White, who utilized the set's distinct noir-fantasy aesthetic to depict a chaotic, infernal scene. As a card tied specifically to the Obscura and Maestros aligned decks of the expansion, it received attention from players for its ability to clear the battlefield while generating a powerful creature token, making it a functional and thematic inclusion for black-aligned Commander decks.
