Where it came from
Remove Soul was released as part of the 2009 Magic Player Rewards program, an initiative by Wizards of the Coast designed to incentivize regular tournament play at local game stores. Players earned these promotional cards by participating in sanctioned events throughout the year, with this particular version featuring unique, high-gloss alternate art not available in standard booster packs. It serves as a functional reprint of a classic counterspell, providing a consistent tool for blue-aligned control decks during the program's active period.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was created by Greg Staples, a long-time contributor to the Magic: The Gathering universe. Staples sought to emphasize the visceral nature of the card's effect, focusing on the dramatic tension of a spirit being forcibly extracted from a physical form. The design was well-received by the community, as the stylized, borderless-frame aesthetic of the 2009 rewards cycle is now highly regarded by collectors for its distinct visual departure from the standard set releases of the era.
