Remove Soul

Remove Soul was released in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion Chronicles. This set was notable for being a compilation of cards from earlier expansions, specifically designed to bring older, out-of-print cards back into circulation for a growing player base. As a common card, it served as a functional reprint of the card originally featured in the Legends set, allowing players to utilize its effect in contemporary gameplay environments of the mid-1990s.

The artwork for this version was provided by artist Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, painterly style was a staple of early Magic: The Gathering card design. Hoover’s illustration sought to capture the visceral and dark essence of the card’s effect, emphasizing the fantasy horror aesthetic prevalent in the game’s early years. While the Chronicles set itself received mixed reactions from the community at the time due to its impact on the secondary market, cards like Remove Soul remain recognized examples of the era's collaborative artistic identity.
