Renari, Merchant of Marvels

Renari, Merchant of Marvels was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. The set was designed to bring the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons, specifically the Forgotten Realms setting, into the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. As a legendary creature featuring the 'Choose a Background' mechanic, Renari was crafted to act as a supportive commander, allowing players to bridge the gap between artifact synergy and the deck-building flexibility inherent to the Baldur's Gate product line.

The character design reflects the whimsical yet mysterious aesthetic common to githyanki traders in the D&D multiverse. The illustration, rendered with the high-fantasy polish characteristic of modern Wizards of the Coast art direction, emphasizes the character's role as a merchant facilitating complex, high-cost spellcasting. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but effective tool for players focusing on artifact-heavy strategies, particularly those looking to introduce flash-like mechanics into their gameplay to manipulate timing and priority.
