Where it came from
Sivriss, Nightmare Speaker was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate. The card was designed to function within the game's Commander format, specifically incorporating the 'choose a Background' mechanic that allows players to customize their commander's identity. Set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons city of Baldur's Gate, the card represents a sivriss, a creature type associated with the darker, necrotic themes of the Forgotten Realms lore.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who utilized a distinct artistic style to capture the character's unsettling and spectral presence. The design focus was on balancing the inherent risk and reward of the graveyard-manipulation ability, which forces a decision between returning resources to the hand or milling the deck. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its efficiency in sacrifice-themed decks, finding a steady place in the meta as a reliable engine for recursion.
