Where it came from
Renegade Troops was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed specifically for the Asian market, drawing thematic inspiration from the historical 14th-century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It utilized the simplified Portal ruleset, which was intended to lower the barrier to entry for new players by removing complex mechanics like instants and stack interaction.
The card features artwork by Qi Baoshan, whose illustrations throughout the set sought to capture the aesthetic and atmosphere of the Three Kingdoms period. While the set was initially distributed with limited availability in Western markets, it eventually gained a cult following among long-term players and collectors. Its design aesthetic remains distinct within the wider Magic catalog due to its departures from the high-fantasy tropes typical of the core game's Western releases.
