Renegade Tactics

Renegade Tactics was first printed as part of the Kaladesh expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2016. Set on the plane of Kaladesh, a world defined by its brilliant inventors and vibrant, steampunk-inspired aesthetics, the card reflects the resourcefulness of the local resistance movement against the ruling Consulate. Mechanically, it functions as a red sorcery designed to provide a small power boost while ensuring an attacker can bypass enemy defenses, capturing the chaotic and inventive nature of the plane's rogues.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Deruchenko Alexander, who utilized a bold, high-contrast style to depict a piece of makeshift equipment typical of the Kaladeshi renegades. The design team focused on creating cards that emphasized the set’s 'energy' and 'artifact' themes, and Renegade Tactics was intended as a common-rarity utility piece that supported aggressive strategies. It later appeared as part of 'The List,' a curated collection of reprints from throughout the game's history, allowing newer players to acquire cards from past expansions.
