Where it came from
Repay in Kind was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the emergence of the Eldrazi, ancient and incomprehensible cosmic entities, and the desperation of the inhabitants of the plane of Zendikar as they faced total annihilation. This card was designed as a rare sorcery that embodies the chaotic, leveling nature of the set's narrative, forcing all players to equalize their life totals to the lowest among them.
The artwork for the card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a French illustrator known for his significant contributions to the visual identity of the Eldrazi. Briclot's design captures a sense of cosmic dread and forced equilibrium, utilizing a stark, otherworldly palette that complements the card's mechanical function. Upon its release, it was noted by players as a highly situational but potent 'reset' button, often utilized in multiplayer formats where the equalization mechanic could be strategically leveraged to disrupt opponents who had gained significant life advantages.
