Where it came from
Reparations was released in 1996 as part of Mirage, the eleventh Magic: The Gathering expansion set. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Mirage introduced a thematic focus on African-inspired folklore and geography, departing from the typical high-fantasy settings of previous releases. The set was designed to balance the game's mechanics after the volatility of earlier expansions, focusing on strategic depth and the introduction of mechanics such as flanking and phasing.
The card features artwork by Margaret Organ-Kean, who contributed several pieces to the Mirage set. Her illustration depicts a symbolic scene of restoration and compensation, aligning with the white color identity of the card, which often focuses on life gain and damage prevention. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a niche defensive option for white-aligned decks, serving as a rare tactical tool within the broader context of the game's evolving competitive landscape.
