Where it came from
Rescuer Sphinx was released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The set focused on a climactic narrative event where dozens of planeswalkers gathered on the plane of Ravnica to battle the villainous Nicol Bolas. The card was designed as a blue common, serving as a tactical piece in the set's high-synergy Limited environment by allowing players to return their own creatures to their hand to reuse enter-the-battlefield abilities.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of the game. Kieryluk depicted the Sphinx in a dynamic, defensive posture that aligns with the card's mechanical role of protection and utility. Within the set, the artwork captures the urgent, multifaceted nature of the conflict on Ravnica, reflecting the broader aesthetic goal of showcasing a massive, multi-front war across the city-plane.
