Where it came from
Resistance Is Futile was released as part of the Star Trek Customizable Card Game, published by Decipher, Inc. in the late 1990s. The card was designed to reflect the Borg collective's iconic mandate of assimilation, serving as a tactical card that forced players to confront the inevitability of the Borg presence during gameplay. Its inclusion in the set was intended to mirror the tension and high-stakes nature of the Borg narrative arcs established in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The visual design of the card utilizes high-resolution stills from the television series, focusing on the imposing aesthetic of the Borg cube and the clinical nature of their infiltration techniques. At the time of its release, the card was widely discussed within the gaming community for its mechanical impact on board control, effectively becoming a staple for players building Borg-themed decks. It remains a representative example of how Decipher integrated thematic storytelling into the mechanics of their collectible card game.
