Where it came from
Restore the Peace was released in 2013 as part of the Dragon's Maze expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Return to Ravnica block, it was designed to conclude the storyline focusing on the conflict between the ten guilds of the city-plane of Ravnica. The card mechanics were specifically crafted to capture the flavor of the Azorius Senate, the guild associated with law and order, by rewarding players for returning attacking creatures to their owners' hands.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Clint Cearley, who utilized a clean, structured aesthetic to reflect the rigid, bureaucratic nature of the Azorius. By depicting a scene of sudden, magical containment, Cearley aimed to emphasize the guild's control-oriented playstyle. The card was received by the player community as a quintessential piece of Azorius-themed utility, valued for its ability to clear the board during critical combat phases.
