Restore Balance

Restore Balance was originally printed in the 2006 expansion Time Spiral, designed by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering by utilizing 'timeshifted' mechanics. The card functions as a 'suspend' iteration of the classic Balance spell, a powerful board-wiping effect that forces players to discard cards, sacrifice lands, and sacrifice creatures until all players have the same number of each. By forcing players to wait three turns for the effect to trigger via the suspend mechanic, the design attempts to balance an otherwise historically restricted and game-warping strategy.

This version of the card, appearing in the 2021 Time Spiral Remastered set as collector number 36, features updated frame aesthetics that evoke the original era of the game while utilizing the modern card frame technology. The illustration by Christopher Rush maintains the somber, elemental tone of the original artwork, depicting a sense of leveled playing fields through cosmic stillness. Upon release, the Time Spiral Remastered set was well-received by long-term fans for its curated approach to reprinting complex and nostalgia-heavy cards for a modern draft environment.
