Where it came from
Retrofitter Foundry was released in 2018 as part of the Commander 2018 set, specifically featured in the 'Exquisite Invention' deck. This deck was designed around the theme of artifacts and mechanical construction, drawing inspiration from the Izzet League's penchant for tinkering and creation on the plane of Ravnica. The card was created to provide a versatile, repeatable source of artifact creatures, allowing players to scale their mechanical army from fragile thopters to robust constructs as the game progresses.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Titus Lunter, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering. Lunter opted for a clinical, industrial aesthetic that emphasizes the utilitarian nature of the Foundry, utilizing a palette of deep blues and oranges that reflects the card's artifact-heavy mechanical identity. Upon its release, it was recognized by players as a highly efficient engine for decks focused on sacrificing and recurring artifacts, eventually becoming a staple in Commander formats where long-term value generation is prioritized.
