Where it came from
The Retrofitter Foundry card was released as part of the 2023 Judge Gift program, a prestigious initiative by Wizards of the Coast to reward tournament judges for their volunteer contributions to the Magic: The Gathering community. The card serves as a premium, alternate-art promotional version of the original artifact card, intended to provide distinguished judges with a unique token of appreciation that reflects the technical and specialized nature of their role in enforcing game rules.
This specific iteration features artwork by artist Zezhou Chen, who shifted the aesthetic of the foundry toward a more intricate, mechanical presentation that emphasizes the card's function of enhancing artifact creatures. Upon its release, the card was received positively by collectors and judges alike, noted for its distinct visual departure from the standard set version and its high-quality foil treatment, which is a hallmark of the Judge Gift card line.
