Where it came from
Reverence was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the conclusion to the Kamigawa block, which drew heavy inspiration from Japanese folklore and mythology. This white enchantment was designed to mirror the set's focus on hand-size mechanics and spiritual themes, specifically rewarding players for maintaining a defensive board state.
The card features illustration by Heather Hudson, a prolific artist in the early years of the game. Her work on this piece captures the serene, meditative nature of the Kamigawa setting, utilizing soft light and traditional imagery to evoke the card's function of pacifying aggressive creatures. It was received as a niche control tool, valued more for its thematic resonance and specific utility in casual formats than for tournament dominance.
