Where it came from
Reverent Hoplite was released in January 2020 as part of the Theros Beyond Death expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set returned players to the plane of Theros, a world deeply inspired by Greek mythology and the influence of gods upon mortals. As a white-mana creature, the card utilizes the 'devotion' mechanic, which rewards players for maintaining a board state consistent with a specific color, reflecting the thematic reliance of the mortal inhabitants on their deities.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who rendered the Hoplite in a style consistent with the set's high-fantasy, mythological aesthetic. The design focuses on the visual language of heroic sacrifice and faith, depicting a soldier surrounded by manifestations of divine light. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional addition to 'go-wide' strategies, where its ability to create multiple tokens based on devotion provided a significant tactical advantage in both limited and constructed formats.
