Where it came from
Reverent Hunter was released in 2013 as part of the Theros expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was heavily inspired by Greek mythology, focusing on themes of gods, heroes, and devotion. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card introduces the 'devotion' mechanic, which rewards players for maintaining a consistent color identity across their permanents, reflecting the theological focus of the plane.
The artwork for this card was created by Chase Stone, who opted for a dynamic, heroic depiction of a hunter gathering his strength under the gaze of Nylea, the god of the hunt. The design was received as a functional, if situational, creature that incentivized aggressive green decks to commit heavily to their color, cementing its role as a thematic pillar within the Theros block’s ecosystem.
