Where it came from
Rewards of Diversity was released in 2000 as part of the Invasion expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set marked a significant narrative shift, focusing on the defense of the plane of Dominaria against a multi-planar invasion. The card belongs to the white mana color identity, which, within the game's mechanics, frequently emphasizes themes of protection, community, and cooperation.
The illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, whose work often brings a painterly, atmospheric quality to the game’s cards. In the context of the Invasion set, the card's design aims to represent the mechanical benefits of fielding creatures with different colors, incentivizing players to build diverse decks. It remains a notable example of early 2000s card design, valued by players for its specific utility in limited formats and its reflection of the set’s broader mechanical themes.
