Rhystic Tutor

Rhystic Tutor was released in 2000 as part of the Prophecy expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore themes of choice and interaction, frequently tasking opponents with the decision to pay a mana cost to prevent a spell's effect. Within this cycle of 'Rhystic' cards, the tutor was conceived as a rare sorcery that allowed a player to search their library for a card, provided the opponent did not pay two generic mana to prevent the search.

The card's visual identity was crafted by veteran artist Dan Frazier, whose work is highly regarded for its foundational role in the early aesthetic of the game. Frazier utilized his characteristic illustrative style to interpret the concept of a magical tutor—a character or force aiding in the acquisition of knowledge. Upon release, the card received a mixed reception from players, as the reliance on an opponent's decision-making made it less consistent than established tutors that offered guaranteed results.
