Where it came from
Ricochet Trap was released in 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as part of a cycle of 'traps' that featured reduced mana costs if an opponent performed specific actions during the turn, fitting the set's theme of adventurers navigating the perilous, landscape-shifting plane of Zendikar. It reflects the set's focus on interactive, reactive gameplay mechanics.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Daarken, whose dark and dynamic style helped define the aesthetic of the Worldwake set. The art captures the chaotic, kinetic energy of redirecting a spell, aligning with the card's function as a specialized counter-tactic against blue spells. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche but effective sideboard tool for players looking to gain an edge in competitive formats against control strategies.
