Where it came from
The Ritual Guardian card was released in 2021 as part of the Art Series for the Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. This set returned players to the gothic horror setting of Innistrad, focusing on themes of lycanthropy and the balance between day and night cycles. These cards were produced as promotional collectibles, designed to showcase the intricate illustrations used throughout the set without the standard game mechanics printed on the face.
The artwork for this piece was created by artist Titus Lunter, who has contributed numerous illustrations to the game's library. In this design, Lunter aimed to capture the foreboding atmosphere of the Innistrad plane, emphasizing the eerie, ritualistic nature of the creatures guarding the sacred sites of the setting. The card features a gallery-style print that highlights the painterly detail of the original digital media, and it is highly regarded among collectors for its focus on the aesthetic world-building of the Midnight Hunt expansion.
