Where it came from
Ritual of Restoration was released in February 2004 as part of the Darksteel expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set centered on the lore of the artificial plane Mirrodin, where the titular metal played a central role in both the narrative and the game mechanics. This card specifically features the 'return from graveyard' utility common to white-aligned cards, fitting the set's thematic focus on artifact reconstruction and mechanical permanence.
The artwork for the card was created by noted fantasy illustrator Rebecca Guay. Known for her distinctive, ethereal watercolor style, Guay was tasked with depicting the act of restoring an artifact through magical intervention. The illustration was well-received by players for its departure from the more rigid, industrial aesthetic prevalent throughout the rest of the Darksteel set, offering a softer, more mystical visual interpretation of the game's restoration mechanics.
