Where it came from
Rivals' Duel was originally released in the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a curated box set designed to consolidate and re-release the popular Planechase format content from 2009 and 2012. The card was specifically featured in the Night of the Ninja deck, a build centered around the unique flavor and mechanical synergies of the Kamigawa plane.
The card’s illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist known for his atmospheric style. Designed to function as a thematic removal spell, the card embodies the tense, adversarial nature of ninja warfare, allowing players to force two opposing creatures to fight. It is widely regarded as a flavorful, albeit situational, removal tool that highlights the set’s focus on high-impact, chaotic multiplayer interactions.
