What it does
At the beginning of each player's upkeep, if that player controls more lands than each other player, this enchantment deals 2 damage to them.
The goblins revered it; the viashino defended it. Only Urza understood it.

Where it came from
Rivalry was released in 1999 as part of Urza's Legacy, the second expansion in the Urza block for Magic: The Gathering. This set is widely recognized for its high power level and focus on the intricate artifact-themed mechanics of the era, reflecting the complex narrative arc surrounding the planeswalker Urza. The card was designed to capitalize on the expansion's mechanical identity, providing a red-aligned enchantment that forces players to navigate aggressive resource tension through a coin-flipping mechanic.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Ron Spencer, whose distinctive, visceral style defined much of the aesthetic of late 90s Magic. Spencer sought to capture the volatile and unpredictable nature of the card's effect, using bold lines and intense, saturated tones to emphasize the conflict inherent in the gameplay mechanic. While the card is often remembered as a niche casual favorite, it serves as a distinct example of the period's experimental design philosophy regarding luck-based gameplay elements.
