Where it came from
Riveteers Ascendancy was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. The card represents the Riveteers, one of the five criminal families ruling the art-deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna. Mechanically, it reflects the family's brutal industrial philosophy, centered on themes of destruction and graveyard recursion, and was designed to reward aggressive play patterns that trade creatures for long-term resource advantages.
The illustrative work was completed by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's distinct 'noir-meets-demon' aesthetic to depict the organized labor force of the family. The promo version, marked 216p, was distributed through promotional channels such as Prerelease events and Wizards Play Network support programs. It is noted by players for its synergy in Commander formats, where its ability to trigger on sacrifice effects provides consistent utility for Grixis-aligned decks.
