Where it came from
Reservoir Kraken was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set draws inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and organized crime tropes, centering on a metropolis ruled by five distinct demon-led families. This specific promo version, identified by collector number 56s, was distributed through the game's official store promotion program to encourage community play.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a vivid, saturated color palette that emphasizes the bioluminescent nature of the creature within the urban landscape of New Capenna. The design aims to capture the tension between the city's opulent, industrialized surface and the dangerous, magical depths beneath. It was well received by collectors for its unique frame treatment and the thematic integration of the Kraken into a noir-inspired fantasy setting.
