Provenance

Where it came from

Roast was originally printed as a common card in the Dragons of Tarkir expansion, released in March 2015. It was designed as a thematic removal spell within the set, which focused heavily on the conflict between the clans of Tarkir and the dragon broods that had reclaimed the plane. The card’s flavor text and mechanics reflect the brutal, direct nature of the Mardu Horde, the clan known for their aggressive, combat-oriented philosophy in the timeline where dragons rule.

The artwork was illustrated by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy artist known for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering aesthetic. Briclot utilized a vibrant, high-contrast style to depict the intense magical fire typical of the set’s dragon-focused lore. Upon its release, Roast was received as a functional tool for Red-aligned decks, specifically valued for its efficiency in dealing with high-toughness creatures that would otherwise evade standard burn spells of its mana cost.
