Where it came from
Roiling Vortex was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising, a return to the adventure-themed plane of Zendikar. The card was designed as a potent tool to punish strategies involving extra card draws and free spell casting, mechanics that had become dominant in competitive formats at the time. Its inclusion in the Zendikar Rising Promos, specifically with collector number 156p, marks it as a variant art release distributed through promotional channels such as Wizards Play Network events.
The visual identity of this card, illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the chaotic, elemental nature of Zendikar’s landscape. Kieryluk’s design focuses on the turbulent energy of the plane, capturing the destructive power of the vortex with a dynamic, swirling composition that reflects the card's aggressive in-game utility. It was received as a staple for Red-based decks in the Commander and Modern formats, appreciated for both its tactical disruptive ability and its atmospheric artwork.
