Where it came from
Rootha, Mercurial Artist was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a student of the Prismari college, which emphasizes creative expression and raw elemental power. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody the college's focus on casting instant and sorcery spells by providing a repeatable ability to copy those effects at the cost of returning a permanent to one's hand.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character work. Villeneuve captured Rootha in a moment of kinetic magical creation, using vibrant colors to reflect the chaotic, artistic nature of the Prismari house. The card was well-received by players for its synergy with spell-heavy deck archetypes and its thematic alignment with the high-magic academic setting of the Strixhaven plane.
