Provenance

Where it came from

Royal Assassin was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was designed to blend the strategic depth of hobby games with the collectible nature of baseball cards. The set was printed in a limited run to test the market, quickly becoming a cultural phenomenon that pioneered the modern trading card game genre.

The card art was illustrated by Douglas Shuler, one of the original artists commissioned for the set. Shuler's depiction of the assassin—a hooded, shadowy figure emerging from the darkness—was intended to evoke the menace and lethal efficiency described in the card's rules. As a staple of the black color identity, the card became widely recognized for its iconic ability to destroy tapped creatures, a mechanic that defined the tactical landscape of early Magic gameplay.
