Royal Assassin

Royal Assassin was first introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fourth Edition base set in 1995. As one of the original black cards, it was designed to embody the color's thematic focus on removal and destruction, serving as a powerful tactical tool that allowed a player to neutralize an opponent's creature each turn. Its presence in Fourth Edition represented the game's shift toward wider availability and the stabilization of its core mechanics for a growing player base.

The iconic illustration for the card was created by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the game's original art director. Myrfors sought to capture the quintessential image of a shadowy, lethal operative lurking in the dark, using a minimalist and moody aesthetic that became emblematic of the early Magic art style. The card was received by the community as a quintessential 'must-remove' threat, cementing its status as a classic staple that defined the interaction between players during the game's formative years.
