Where it came from
The Rug of Smothering was introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, released in 2022. It is based on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons creature, a classic construct designed to surprise adventurers by appearing as an ordinary floor covering before constricting its targets. This interpretation leans into the tactical, chaotic nature of the Commander format, where players are often rewarded for punishing their opponents' rapid playstyles.
The card’s artwork was crafted by illustrator Joseph Meehan, who emphasized the menacing, deceptive texture of the creature. Meehan’s design effectively captures the rug’s dual nature as both a piece of home decor and a lethal predator. Within the set, it serves as a flavorful homage to the tabletop experience of the Baldur's Gate campaign, standing out as a niche yet memorable utility card that highlights the game's ability to blend whimsical D&D lore with strategic card mechanics.
